Wedding photographer FAQs

Below are some questions I get asked a lot as a wedding photographer. Get in touch if you would like to know anything else, and we can organise a chat.

Do you shoot alone or do you have a team?

Normally, Dan will shoot a wedding alone. However we have a great network of second shooter and associate photographers if there is a need for more than one wedding photographer on the day or if we are already booked.

If needed, would you be able to work extra hours?

Yes – we can discuss your requirements and agree a cost from the outset.

Are you able to travel?

We are based in London and Hertfordshire but more than happy to travel wherever you are getting married, even if that’s abroad!

Do you charge for travel and accommodation?

We don’t charge for travel unless your wedding is a considerable distance from London. In this instance, accommodation may also be necessary but we will always highlight this when you enquire.

Do you have WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER insurance?

Yes, it covers all eventualities on and before the day.

What’s the delivery time for photos?

We aim to deliver photos to you within 6-8 weeks after your wedding day. It is often quicker outside of the summer months.

In case of unforeseen circumstances, do you have a replacement WEDDING photographer?

We have a large network of associate photographers, and would always try to find a replacement in an emergency situation.

How do I book?

A small deposit is required to secure your date – this holds the day for you as well as helps to cover some of the time we spend preparing before the day. The remaining balance due four weeks before your wedding date.

What is your advice for couples who feel awkward in front of the camera?

This was us! We learnt it was important to pick a wedding photographer who is as subtle and as relaxed as possible, and who is sympathetic towards your discomfort in front of the camera – you want the photos to look back over in years to come, but you don’t want to have your day be altered in order for them to be captured. This is why our approach is to view the day almost from the viewpoint of a guest – take it all in and capture all the wonderful moments, but without getting up in people’s faces too much. We also learnt that actually, on your wedding day, this feeling is far from your mind. You’re far too busy having fun and chatting to all your friends and family to be concerned about having your picture taken. We generally always take couple portraits, but try to make them as natural as possible – usually getting the couple to go for a walk or say something silly to each other is enough to capture something really intimate and personal of the couple alone on their day.

We also offer engagement shoots, which really helps practice being in front of the lens. You think you’re going to feel really silly but then it’s just a walk around somewhere you love, a casual chat and maybe a drink, but there just happens to be a camera there too!

Do you take group shots/family photos on the day?

Yes – whilst posed photos aren’t at the heart of what we do, family members especially, often like the wedding photographer to take group photos of everyone together – so we will of course oblige! In our conversations and paperwork before the day, we will go through the shot list and combinations you hope to capture so that we don’t miss anyone out.

How many photos will we receive?

It depends on the length of time we are booked for and how many guests are at your day – it can range from around 550-800 images.

Who owns the copyright for the images?

Story + Colour retain the copyright of the images because we took them – but that doesn’t stop you from copying the files, sharing with friends, family and on social media, or printing away to your heart’s content. It just means you cannot make money from them. This is standard across the industry.

Can you help me print my photos?

We use a album producer and photo printer who has an incredible, unrivalled quality – we can get you some free test prints to prove it. You can read more about the wedding photo albums or get in touch if you’d like more information.

Going through the pictures feels feels like I’m watching our day in a picture story book! You managed to catch so many lovely things, and most of the time we had no idea you were clicking away. I was filled of emotions last night, and had a good giggle at some of the pictures!
