Micklefield Hall multicultural wedding

Viv and Dwij’s wedding day at Micklefield Hall was a fun-packed multicultural celebration. It started early in the morning with the Chinese tradition of blocking the groom from entering the Bride’s home (or in this case bedroom) to collect his bride until he proves himself worthy. This involves completing fun and hilarious challenges set by the bridesmaids. It’s definitely a great way to kick off the wedding day.

They then continue the day with not only the traditional civil service around Micklefield Hall’s beautiful water feature but also a Hindu service and Chinese tea ceremony. After the formalities, they relaxed with cocktails and canapés before dancing the night away.

What an epic day of cultures and celebration.

Micklefield Hall outdoor wedding

Within about two emails after Lucy and Tom got in touch regarding their wedding photography, we realised they lived two doors down and decided to meet in our local pub. They were planning a Micklefield Hall outdoor wedding, a beautiful venue with stunning grounds just minutes down the road from us.

Micklefield Hall has everything you need for your wedding day. From any accommodation needs the night before and after, the option for an indoor or outdoor ceremony, beautiful stretching gardens to roam around and sip some cocktails and the restored barn for drinking and dancing into the night.

A good venue and a great staff will always make the day feel fun and seamless, and that’s exactly what the folks at Micklefield Hall do.

Can’t wait for my next wedding there!

5 amazing barn wedding venues

5 amazing barn wedding venues

Gate Street Barn

Set in the surrey hills just 5 miles outside of Guilford. Whenever I’ve shot at Gate Street Barn I’ve always felt that it was the perfect layout for a wedding. With a number of areas for every part of your day, you move seamlessly from ceremony to reception and on to the wedding breakfast without evening knowing the work happening behind the scenes. The surrounding areas are fantastic for couple shots, although you could easily stay within a 20 metre radius of the barn itself and still get some lovely shots.

Lillibrook Manor

This estate is set in the Thames Valley in a stunning grade 2 listed building, with beautiful spacious grounds catering to whatever their guests desire. When I worked at Lillibrook Manor the ceremony was outside in the Cloister Garden, a courtyard surrounded by brick walls and old barn doors. The couple also hired dogems and fun fair stalls for the evening which the venue happily hosted in the area just outside the Great Barn where they held the wedding breakfast.

Upwaltham Barn

Found in the rolling south downs, drive too fast and you’ll miss the entrance. This is another venue that seems to have been perfectly designed for your wedding day. The barn, ceremony hall and bridal suite are all surrounding a beautiful courtyard where you guests can drink and chat after the ceremony before heading inside for the wedding breakfast. There’s also a small, picturesque garden for anyone who wants take a time out from the wedding crowds.

The Tithe Barn

Shooting at Tithe Barn meant a bit of a road trip for me, living just outside London I drove 5 hours up into the beautiful yorkshire country side but it was totally worth it. It’s a brand new venue opening only mid 2018 and I had the honour of shooting their very first wedding. It’s lovely and spacious with a nice, intimate little garden area for reception drinks but enough room inside if the weather wasn’t looking great. But if the sun is out, enjoy the view of the beautiful Bolton Abbey, which is definitely where you want to go for some photos at sunset.

Stone Barn

This is another venue that has the perfect layout and combination or areas to suit any wedding. It has a great mix of traditional decor but with a modern architectural twist. Choose between the stone barn itself or the charming garden area for your ceremony. Wander around the beautiful Cotswold countryside for your couple shots, then head in for the wedding breakfast in the light and spacious dining hall. The corrugated metal ceiling and hanging fairy lights adds a cosy, magical feel to the day. I absolutely loved shooting at this venue and can’t wait to go back!
Rachel + Peter // Tithe Barn

Tithe Barn Yorkshire wedding

No, Peter and Rachel are not models that I hired for the day. They’re a real-life couple that are completely in love.

This was a fun one for me, not only because Peter and Rachel’s was the first wedding at the new Tithe Barn but also because I got to visit Skipton. A town that I visited regularly as a young boy to see my great aunt.

From Skipton, we made our way to the Tithe barn which overlooks the beautiful Bolton Abbey. A great view for the guests and a lovely location for some couple shots at sunset.

You really couldn’t ask for more!

Bryony + Craig // Shustoke Barn

Bryony + Craig // Shustoke Barn

Bryony and Craig were married at Shustoke Barn, Warwickshire in March this year, on the first sunny weekend after the early spring snow. It was a relaxed, boho-inspired wedding day, with outfits and flowers in blues and greys. We were so in love with Bryony’s dress and the gorgeous flowers at this one – not to mention the atmospheric Shustoke Barn, owned by family run Cripps & Co, who have several beautiful barns we’ve had the pleasure of shooting at (including the first ever wedding at the Tithe Barn at Bolton Abbey – we can’t wait to share this wedding!). Being a wedding photographer means Dan gets to travel to the best places! Abi + Ollie

Abi + Ollie

Abi + Ollie had a wonderful country wedding in the Gloucestershire countryside – in Abi’s family home’s grounds no less! Rustic in parts, every detail was well-thought through and beautiful. Shooting it was a pleasure.

Hattie + Peter

Hattie + Peter

Upwaltham Barns is becoming one of our firm favourite venues. We had the pleasure of shooting Hattie + Peter’s wedding there in March – with Spring in the air, champagne in the glasses and everyone suited and booted (Hattie in a gorgeous Jesus Piero gown), it made for a fantastic day of celebrating.

India + Nick

India + Nick

This English country garden wedding is full of the biggest laughs you’ve ever seen – from ceremony to speeches to the first dance, it was a giggle-fest, start to finish. Held at the Olde Bell in Hurley, Berkshire, India and Nick hosted a wonderful easy-going day of genuine and straightforward love and affection for all their family and friends as well as each other. Shooting it was an absolute privilege.

Cat + Oli // Upwaltham barn wedding

Cat + Oli // Upwaltham barn wedding

After a fun engagement shoot in Paris last January, I was looking forward to seeing Cat and Oli again on their wedding day. Upwaltham Barns is becoming a favourite venue of mine – this was my third wedding there, and as a family-run business they really know how to run a wedding day with the greatest of care, consideration and attention to detail. I think my favourite moment of the day was the kids chanting to lure Oli and Cat outside to have picture taken with them. A super cute bunch.

Ally + Paul // Caswell House

Ally + Paul // Caswell House

Ally is the most organised bride, no, most organised person, we’ve ever met. Her wedding to Paul was our longest standing booking for photography for quite some time, and we also helped make their vision for their wedding invites and later the table plan and a few other bits and bobs for the day, a reality. They got engaged in New York, so the table names were based on their favourite places they had visited, and by contrast their ceremony and reception took place at the very beautiful and classically English Caswell House in the Cotswolds. I’m always super excited by a bride in a tea-length dress as I had one myself (easier for dancing!), and Ally’s was just gorgeous and suited her to a T.

Jessica + Sandeep

Jessica + Sandeep

After Jessica and Sandeep’s English countryside civil ceremony on the Monday, I was really excited to see them again and shoot their Indian wedding at Merriscourt in the Cotswolds just a few days later – my first ever Indian wedding. I was looking forward to seeing the rituals of another culture but in terms of shooting the pictures, I couldn’t wait to see the colourful celebrations. And they did not disappoint! With the August sunshine in our favour, one of my favourite parts of the day was watching and listening to the procession of drummers who lead Sandeep to the one of the ceremonies on horseback, as well as the amazing food courtesy of The Clay Oven. Meeting these guys and shooting both their wedding days was a real highlight of 2015.

Jessica + Sandeep

Jessica + Sandeep

We met Jessica and Sandeep in a local burger restaurant when they were searching for their wedding photographer. The plan was for a Hindu ceremony in the Cotswolds, preceded by a small civil ceremony the week before. As time went on, the plans for the English civil ceremony grew, so that Jessica could have a white dress and all the things she had always imagined at her big day. The ceremony took place at Chicheley Hall in Buckinghamshire, followed by a reception on family land, surrounded by the great outdoors.

There is so much we love about this wedding; Jessica and Sandeep never stop smiling (really), the personal details at the reception that really showed how much effort family and friends had put in to make the day so special for the couple, and the anticipation of the Indian ceremony just four days later, made it one of our favourites.

Sarah + Stuart

Sarah + Stuart

This felt like the perfect wedding to share on such a rainy Friday. Sarah and Stuart got married on August bank holiday. It meant a road trip for us from London to Devon, where we found the sun shining! The entire event was held at the Kingston Estate, in Staverton, near Totnes. The Georgian House venue was incredible and the weather kind enough for the ceremony to be held in the beautiful grounds – it even held long enough for the first dance to take place in the courtyard, under the moon and fairy lights. It was a perfect day – any wedding that includes hay bales and blankets gets the thumbs up from us.

The rain is pouring down outside. The guests are arriving and running from their cars into the pub entrance below. I’m watching from a bedroom window with Helen and her bridesmaids. There are a few worried looks but Helen is perfectly calm, she’s getting married today and that’s all that matters.

The venue is The White Horse near the South Downs National Park, a lovely place with amazing grounds, perfect for a country wedding shoot. Having rained all morning, the rest of the day goes off without a hitch, beautiful sunshine, drinks, laughter and some old school dance moves.

Katie + Arber

Set in the beautiful Gate Street Barn with the sun shining I could tell this would be a great wedding.

Hearing the wedding ideas on their engagement shoot a few months back, I was excited to see how things had panned out. I knew Arber was a comic book fan (sorry, Graphic Novels) and if you look closely, there’s a really cool comic book theme running through out the day, from the confetti cones to the table plan. It was all so well thought out and really added that personal touch that makes a wedding unique.

Emma + Tom

Emma + Tom

2014 has been an epic year at Story + Colour and I couldn’t think of a better way to end it than with Emma and Tom’s beautiful barn wedding at Upwaltham Barn. Going through these photos I can’t help but smile, it was such a happy day, everything was just perfect. The sun was shining down and with small bursts of beautifully atmospheric rain and clouds, I couldn’t have asked for more.

Golnaz + Russell

Golnaz + Russell

I’d been looking forward to this wedding since I shot Russell and Golnaz’s engagement shoot at The Grove Hotel a few months back. Firstly, The Grove Hotel is just amazing, the grounds are stunning and it’s the prefect venue for a wedding. Secondly, Russell and Golnaz are such a lovely couple and were so easy to work with, so to shoot not only their civil service but also a second Persian ceremony was really exciting. The whole day was a huge celebration of family and friends and I loved being a part of it.

Rachel + Chris

Rachel + Chris

We’ve known Rachel and Chris for a quite a few years now and it was pleasure to be asked to shoot their intimate Horsham wedding. I am of course a professional and acted accordingly but I was also under strict instructions to enjoy myself and make sure I had at least a few glasses of wine at dinner… these really are the best kind of weddings!

It’s a great thing to see and experience true emotions from your friends and family, it doesn’t happen often enough and that’s why weddings are so great – people talk, they laugh, they cry…. and this day had it all.

Amy + Ben

Amy + Ben

I shot Ben and Amy’s engagement shoot earlier this year in Columbia Road Market in London which was great fun, so had been looking forward to the wedding with much anticipation. What I love about these two is how completely natural they are in front of the camera, they’re a photographer’s dream,  just looking at them makes me smile. The whole day took place at Upwaltham Barn near Chichester which was a beautiful setting for their pretty, stylish wedding. My highlight of the day was the Israeli dancing, which I’d never seen before first hand but I can now say that I would highly recommend it for anyone planning their day… or at least something similar!

Alice + Matt

Alice + Matt

There are few better ways to spend your weekend than witnessing friends getting married. When one of them is someone you’ve known since childhood it’s even better – it’s a great milestone to add to years and years of happy memories. When they have their wedding in Devon and you have a long weekend away with all your closest friends, it’s off the chart.

There are no two people better suited than Matt and Alice – they have the same sense of humour, appetite for the great outdoors and they met while both studying medicine. We certainly had a day of sophistication and elegance – the venue (Shilstone House), the food, the beautiful bride in her beautiful dress – but we think those in attendance will have come away with memories of uncontrollable giggling, a few rude jokes and Alice’s fantastically dry, tongue-in-cheek speech about what it is to become a wife. Top that off with a dance floor that buzzed all night, more bunting than we thought was humanly possible for one person to make (Alice’s mum should set up shop!) and a tower of delicious, locally-sourced cheese, and it certainly was one of the most enjoyable weddings yet.

Congratulations guys, we think the world of you both, and thank you – we’ve had the best time reliving the day through these pictures and hope you have too.

Laura and Dan xx
